"...I need some ground to stand on. I need to build some god damn backbone. I want to get some fucking respect!"
—Claire explaining her reasons to become the Red Team's second in command to Thomas (The Adventure Begins)

Sergeant Natasha Claire is a main character in the machinima Sandguardians. Being the snarky yet clever one of the Sandbox Red Team, Claire first appears in Did I Do That?, acting as Sergeant Wilbur's right-hand woman, which annoys her teammates Miller and Gates.

Claire is presented as a clever and ambitious soldier who strives to be taken seriously, due to her teammates constantly shooting down her ideas. This has caused Claire to develop a sarcastic attitude to hide her insecurities. In addition, she also uses this to fly under the radar and learn more about her teammates.

Claire is also shown to be insecure, regularly wanting to prove herself to others. This gets Claire into trouble as her drive to accomplish goals puts her in situations she's not yet ready for. However, her courage to be openly vulnerable and make mistakes inspires those around her to do the same on numerous occasions. Claire is also open to listen to others and consider their ideas and contributions.

While a bit selfish and unsure of herself at times, Claire cares for her teammates and is willing to get her hands dirty to do the right thing.

Personality[]

Claire was initially very timid and somewhat pressured by her teammates, normally gossiped about by them, specifically Gates & Miller, due to her spending much time with Sergeant Wilbur

However, Claire is certainly an undetectable threat, as she is usually the only member on her team who thinks more strategically and outside of the box than the others. She is also the only soldier in Sandbox that focuses on other soldiers individually. For instance, she managed to give descriptions of each of her teammates based on her own observations in The Adventure Begins

Despite this, her teammates still see her as a non-threat and sometimes even an annoyance, regularly alienating her, due to being Wilbur's "favorite". Because of this, Claire has shown signs of selfishness and is willing to solely help herself rather than her own team. In Season 2, she tells Thomas about her plans to become second-in-command of the Red Team, explaining that she's tired of being the "background character" and wants to get respect. Unfortunately, Claire's concerns continues to be neglected by her team which results in her isolating herself, though this lasts briefly.

As the series progresses, Claire has develops more confidence in herself and her beliefs, being more willing to stand up for what she believes is right. She also regulates the emotions of others, specifically Gates and Miller, and helps de-escalate tense situations. In Season 3, Claire grows less selfish and more noble in her actions, actively trying to keep her team together and finding ways to better herself as a soldier. While she expresses her insecurities as a leader, Claire is shown to put herself in harms way in order to protect those she cares about and dislikes having to leave others behind.

In Season 4, Claire wrestles with her fears of being hunted by the ONC, ultimately wanting to keep her team together. Despite this, she shows several acts of bravery such as helping Nash fight Samuel, covering Gates in Temple of Doom, and being the voice of reason when the Reds and Nash argue.

Overall, Claire is snarky yet compassionate, having to do what she can to get ahead but unwillingly to leave those who need help behind.

Skill[]

Claire with Gates

Claire has shown much competence in the field, preferably in strategy than in combat.

Strategic Thinking[]

Claire has shown, however, a superior skill in strategy and critical thinking. She was the first soldier on her team to acknowledge the Blues' strange behavior and immediately went to go do something about it. After investigating more of the Blue Team's behavior, she, along with Gates, nearly executed a surprise attack on the Blues, until they were called back to base in Episode 13.

In Season 2, Claire explains an elaborate plan to become the second-in-command of the Red Team. In Episode 20, she suggests the Reds perform a counterattack on the Blues while they're defenseless, after being told to simply spy on them. Because of her ability to take action, Claire expresses many leadership qualities. Ironically, Claire becomes the appointed leader of Red team in Ghosts That Linger.

Relationships[]

Wilbur[]

Claire and Wilbur

One could say Wilbur is seen as Claire's pimp as the two are usually seen together, mostly doing something sexual. Claire also seems to reluctantly respect him, always wanting to make him proud or impress him. In Episode 17, Claire was unable to explain her relationship with Wilbur to Thomas, feeling embarrassed about the subject. However in Episode 20, Claire becomes infuriated when Wilbur puts her on lookout duty and tries to tell him that the Reds should counterattack the Blues. When Wilbur simply tries to flirt with her, she coldly backs away and tells him off, now seeing his true colors. Later on in Episode 25, Claire tries to explain a situation to Wilbur, but Wilbur ignores and threatens to have her court-martialed.

Gates[]

Claire and Gates S2

Gates initially judged Claire as a whore, due to her incident in Episode 3. Claire, however, doesn't seem to care and sees his attitude as a sense of jealousy. Gates is shown to be unreasonably harsh towards Claire because of this, as he believes she receives special treatment from Wilbur because she pleasures him. However, Claire does prove to him that she is competent in battle and the two begin to see eye to eye. The two have also been shown to work well together, as they spied on the Blues and nearly attacked them, throughout the third quarter of Season 1. In Season 2, Claire describes Gates as a brother, though Gates sees Claire as more than a friend or sibling, willing to put himself in danger to protect her.

In Season 3, the two gain mutual respect for one another and take turns in leading the team. When Gates threatened to leave the Guardians Claire was clearly upset and angry. Feeling guilty, Gates stayed as a result, much to Claire's relief. Claire then asks Gates why he decided to stay but the two are attacked by Bernard. Claire later saves Gates during the battle of DotCom.

Miller[]

Miller and Claire

There has not been much direct interaction between Miller & Claire during Season 1, besides the incident in Episode 3. It is unclear, however, if his thoughts on Claire is the same as Gates'. In Episode 17, Claire sees Miller as a cool and quiet guy that suffers from herd mentality. In Episode 24, the two were able to engage in a conversation and get along with each other. However, in the following episode, Claire lost some respect for Miller after he failed to bravely inform Sergeant Wilbur about what they discovered.

Thomas[]

Claire and Thomas seem to get along well together, as the two were able to engage in a lengthy conversation during Episode 17. Claire sees Thomas as a nerd who has a crush on her, while Thomas sees Claire as whore and sex toy.

Trivia[]

  • Claire is the first female character to appear in the series.
  • From her debut until Season 4, Claire wore the standard Mark VI armor. However, as of that season's finale, she now bears a CQB chest plate.
